Cory's recette de cocktail

I based my recipe on thinking orange, thinking bubbly, and thinking Mionetto.

My favourite use of oranges is generally in Amaro. This drink specifically features ‘Amara’ which is a Sicilian blood orange Amaro balanced with Italian herbs and aromatics. The bold bittersweet-blood orange flavour pairs beautifully with the citrus notes of Mionetto.

In paying tribute to family, I incorporate two heaping barspoons of “Fam Jam” which is a seasonal jam grown and made by my family from fruits grown in the garden. This allows the drink to maintain a sense of place while still ultimately showcasing imported Italian showstoppers like Mionetto and Amaro. This year “Fam Jam” is made with fresh strawberries!

To bolster Mionetto’s acidity but also add depth and character, I reached for Aged Balsamic Vinegar De Modena. This famous Italian ingredient is a staple in professional kitchens around the world for its amazing flavour and complexity but also just at home in cocktails.

Finally, we grab some fresh basil from our trusty garden and toss it in the tin with three-quarters of an ounce of the Amara, the two heaping barspoons of “Fam Jam” and just a dash or two of Aged Balsamic before shaking over ice.

Fine strain into a low ball glass filled with ice and top with Mionetto Prosecco. Garnish with a twist of orange and sit back just in time for the afternoon football match.

Qu'est-ce qui a inspiré la boisson?

This cocktail is dedicated to my 'Nonno' who immigrated from Italy to Canada as a young man and passed away peacefully last year. He was often found on the couch Saturday and Sunday afternoons with a rocks glass of Amaro or red wine watching the football (soccer) match.

A cocktail that is built and derived from Italian heritage and family. Dedicated to my grandfather, it highlights amazing products imported from Italy but complimented by our family garden. I implore you to shake one up for yourself using your own "Fam Jam" and fresh basil, just don't forget the Mionetto!
