What inspired the drink?

The second I saw the cherries in the mystery basket my mind went to cherry blossoms which then lead to a (quick) daydream about Japan. I wanted the cherries to bring together my love for Japanese and Italian ingredients. By using common Japanese flavours such as shiso, sake and yuzu and using the cherries to couple them with the Mionetto Prosecco provided a perfect balance between my two favourite culinary destinations. The result- a refreshing, complex, yet simple amalgamation of flavours that are perfect for any day, at any time, in any place.

Madama Butterfly is an iconic Italian opera from the early 1900’s that depicted an initially tumultuous and eventually heartbreaking love affair between a U.S. Naval Officer and a young Japanese woman. Entrenched in Italian history with a large focus on Japanese culture, Madama Butterfly was the perfect name to express the union of ingredients within this cocktail.
